United 93 (Paul Greengrass, 2006)

A film about the United Airlines flight from New Jersey to San Francisco that was hijacked by four al-Qaeda terrorists and subsequently crashed into a Pennsylvanian field after the desperately brave efforts of passengers to regain control. It Draws on countless reports and transcripts of the phone calls the victims made before they died.

Fahrenheit 9/11 (Michael Moore, 2004)

Michael Moore’s documentary might have won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, but it was deemed so controversial that the director was accused of being a liar and a traitor and received many death threats. Moore’s attacks on how media organizations had acted as cheerleaders for the 2003 invasion of Iraq was partly vindicated by the revelation that Judith Miller of the New York Times had too easily accepted at face value made-up stories about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction.

This international film composed of 11 contributions from different filmmakers, each from a different country. They all give their own vision of the events in New York during the September 11 attacks, in a short film of 11 minutes, 9 seconds, and one frame . The original concept and production of the film were by French producer Alain Brigand. It has been released internationally with several different titles, depending on the language.

The Path to 9/11 (David L. Cunningham, 2006)

This two-part miniseries aired in the United States on ABC television on September 10 and 11, 2006. The film dramatizes the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the events leading up to the September 11, 2001 attacks. The film stars Harvey Keitel and Donny Wahlberg.

The film was controversial for its alleged misrepresentation of events and people and required last minute editing before broadcast. ABC spent $40 million on the project, but The Path to 9/11 was beaten in the ratings by an NFL game.

World Trade Center ( Oliver Stone, 2006)

Based on the September 11 attacks at the World Trade Center, the movie stars Nicholas Cage, Maria Bello, Michael Pena and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film was shot between October 19, 2005, and February 10, 2006, and released on August 9, 2006.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Stephen Daldry, 2011)

This American movie drama was an adaptation of the novel of the same name and stars Thomas Horn, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and Max von Sydow. Despite mixed reviews, the film was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for von Sydow. The film earned $55.2 million on a $40 million budget.

The Woman Who Wasn’t There ( Angelo Guglielmo, 2012)

This documentary tracks Tania Head, as she poses as a 9/11 survivor, incorporating herself into a support group and weaving an intense web of lies for over six years. Her deception and its effect on those surrounding her present a compelling look at pathology and the lengths we are willing to go to garner acceptance.

8:46 (Jennifer Gargano, 2011)

This drama film gives a glimpse into the lives of an ensemble of characters leading up to the moment the world changed forever - 8:46 a.m. Tuesday September 11, 2001.

9/11(Jules and Gedeon Naudet, James Hanlon, 2002)

The brothers, residents of the United States since 1989, were in New York City at the time of the September 11 attacks to film a documentary on members of the Engine 7, Ladder 1 firehouse in Lower Manhattan. Jules captured the only clear footage of the first jet, American Airlines, Flight 11, hitting the North tower of the World Trade Center. The footage shot in 2001 would become the 2002 documentary, 9/11. The video camera that Jules was using that captured Flight 11 crashing into the World Trade Center is now on display in the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.)

Man On Wire (James Marsh, 2008)

To Philippe Petit, a young French high-wire artist, The Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center, represented the ultimate tight-rope challenge. James Marsh’s documentary, part oral-history, part crime-thriller, reconstructs the extraordinary walk that Petit and his friends engineered in August 1974.
