It's surprising what a new year can deliver. As we approached a brand new season of MotoGP, we expected yet another dogfight between the Repsol Honda ace Marc Marquez against the scrappy Yamaha contenders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo. However, it was neither a Honda or Yamaha-powered motorcycle that grabbed the final pole position after the Saturday qualifying session: it was the brand-new Ducati GP15 ridden by Andrea Dovizioso.

“That lap time is not something impossible. It's a really good lap time with the soft tyre for the qualifying. The really good thing is the feeling I had on the bike and I was able to do what I wanted and this didn't happen many times in my career so I'm really happy especially for that," said Dovi. "My pace in FP4 was really, really good and that I think is more impressive than the qualifying so I'm really happy with that and everything is really good for the race.”

In fact, the pace of the new Ducati is real and Valentino estimates that the Yamaha motorcycles are losing about 10 km/h on the straight. Meanwhile, Dani Pedrosa, who is the fastest Honda of the weekend, posted a personal best that was still 0.217 seconds off of Dovi. Despite the real threat from the Italian team, Dani Pedrosa believes he has a chance to challenge Andrea Dovizioso at the front.

“We were working a lot during the practice and trying to get the best feeling for the race, but I think today it was important to be on the front row,” Pedrosa said. “We could see that the factory riders and non-factory riders' lap times were very good and all the laps were really, really tight. One or two tenths down could change a lot in terms of the positions so to be second is a great thing. It was fantastic, because I think that it was one of my fastest laps at this track.

“We could see already in the test that they were fast [Ducati riders] but also the other Ducatis are quite in front, so overall at this track they are going very well,” Pedrosa added.

So how does the defending champion Marc Marquez feel about the new rivals? The ace Repsol Honda rider's fastest lap was a1:54.427, 0.324 seconds behind Dovi.

“No, I'm not surprised about Ducati because already in the test they were fast with the race tyre but it's a good thing that another manufacturer has arrived and it looks like they are very competitive, not just on one lap but also with the race pace,” said Marquez.

“Tomorrow we will try to fight for the victory and we will try to stay especially with Andrea because on one lap he was strong, but also the pace is good. Then with Dani [Pedrosa], he showed in the race he will do a step and also the Yamaha riders, but I feel ready so we will try to be there.

As for the two Yami riders, rear grip seems to be a major obstacle at Qatar.

“For me, first of all in this track we are quite slow in the straight and we lose more than seven or eight kilometres [per hour] and 10 to the Ducati and that starts to be a big step,” Valentino Rossi remarked after the qualifying session. “We are struggling with a little bit for rear grip and we tried to fix it; in some areas we improved and in some areas we still have some problems. But we have to wait until tomorrow because from today until tomorrow every team will improve the setting and we will try to do the same.

“Also we have to wait for the race to understand the level because last year we had two Yamahas and two Hondas and now it looks like we have six bikes because the Ducatis are stronger. So now we have to understand in the race what happens,” Rossi continued. “The Yamaha was always a little bit slow in Qatar; I don't know why, but maybe from the exit of the last corner. Our bike for sure is not faster than last year so maybe the other guys have improved.”
