April 20, or 4/20 is known and embraced by pot smokers around the world as “weed day” or maybe also “marijuana appreciation day.” This started in 1990 in Oakland. Steven Bloom, then a reporter for High Times magazine and currently the publisher of CelebStoner.com, was wandering through a gathering of hippies that got together before every Grateful Dead Concert, someone handed him a flyer. It said, “We are going to meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing in Marin County at the Bolinas Ridge sunset spot on Mt. Tamalpais.”
Along with the flyer he also received a 420 back story that said “420 started somewhere in San Rafael, California in the late 70’s. It started as the police code for Marijuana smoking in Progress. After local heads heard of the police call, they started using the expression 420 when referring to herb, let’s go 420!”
