President Obama and Alejandro Sanz

In July, 2013, Alejandro Sanz joined 15 members of the environmental organization Greenpeace in a one-week long trip to the Arctic. The purpose of this trip was to witness the effects of global warming to lobby for its protection. According to a Greenpeace report, in the last 30 years, up to 75 percent of the Arctic packed ice has melted. If nothing changes, in 10 or 20 years, the area will have no ice and will become a sea.

This would dramatically accelerate the process of global warming. The seasons, crops, food we can grow, forests, beaches, sea level and animal species would irreversibly change. Sanz immediately committed to the "Save The Arctic" cause, alongside other Hispanic celebrities like Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Pedro Almodóvar, and two months after his trip, he sent a letter to President Obama seeking an end to offshore Arctic oil drilling, urgent measures to protect fish stocks and the marine environment and for the creation of a global sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the North Pole.

On Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, Sanz announced on his Twitter account that he received a letter from President Obama recognizing the need to protect the Arctic and take action. “It's time! The big news I have for you is that President Obama has responded to my letter about the Arctic, recognizing the need to protect it and take action,” Alejandro wrote.

“This is a huge step toward getting an Arctic sanctuary, our main goal. I thank the President for his support and trust that he will take a leadership role in this struggle, because our future depends on the Arctic.” To read President Barack Obama’s full letter, penned on Nov. 20, 2013, click here.
