Former Venezuelan Miss Universe Alicia Machado has joined environmental group “People for Ethical Treatment of Animals” (PETA) with a very resounding message: "I prefer to be naked than to wear furs".
The actress and host, who Donald Trump used to bully for being overweight, posed without clothes in a campaign against the use of animal skins.
The beauty queen proudly stands in her own skin in a shot in which she is seen naked to ask consumers and industry to stop using animals in the making of clothes.
"When an animal is bred to be killed, to make clothing, it is monstrous. … It is something that is terribly cruel, and I think it is the biggest example of the frivolity and superficiality that human beings are capable of," Machado said on the PETA Latino video.
She considered that, with the alternatives offered by the new materials, it is no longer "necessary to dress in animals" and said that thinking about wearing fur is "shameful".
Therefore, she pleads fashion and beauty industries to stop using the skins, as it are not "elegant" to wear a "corpse".
PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to wear," notes that rabbits, foxes, minks, and other animals on fur farms slowly go insane in tiny wire-bottomed cages. They're beaten, electrocuted, killed, and even skinned alive for their fur.
After their decision to undress before the cameras is the knowledge that the clothes and adornments made with skin cause great suffering to the animals, who also live crowded on farms before being sacrificed.
"More than half of the skin that enters the US is imported from China, where millions of dogs and cats are hung, beaten and often skinned alive," says the environmental group, adding that labels from many suppliers don't specify which animal comes from the skin.
The environmental organization has already succeeded in convincing celebrities such as Eva Méndez, Roselyn Sanchez, Sofia Sisniega, Rocsi Díaz, Evelyn Lozada, Daniella Alonso or Patricia de León to pose for PETA campaigns, among others.
