Stevie Wonder was in Brazil over the weekend, where he performed at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia for the first edition of the Circuito Banco do Brazil Festival. This event also featured artists such as Jason Mraz, Ivete Sangalo, Capital Inicial, Criolo and Baile do Simonal. The day after his show, Wonder was getting ready to go to the airport to return to the United States, when he decided to stop at a confectionery. Joao Filho, a saxophonist, was having lunch in a nearby restaurant with his wife and 5-year-old daughter, when they saw the American music legend go inside a store on the same block.
"I saw Stevie Wonder and went outside the confectionery and started playing saxophone. Security asked me to not approach him," he said. "So my wife who suggested to play 'The Girl from Ipanema.' She knew Stevie Wonder likes Brazilian music and I was playing jazz," added Filho. According to the musician, Stevie Wonder's reaction was "automatic." "After I played Tom Jobim, he went crazy. He stopped and asked me to wait for him while he went to his car to get his harmonica. So then security wasn't saying anything because it was their boss who approached me."
The saxophonist said he spent 40 minutes playing with the American musician on the sidewalk of a confectionery. A crowd formed around the duo and Wonder pleased many, also taking pictures with them. "Before leaving, he called me on the side, called my wife and my daughter and gave us $200," he said. "I have it in my wallet, and although I have a planned trip to the United States very soon, I think I'm going to frame that money," expressed Filho about the generous "donation" from Stevie Wonder.
