A fake android BBM App was launched on Google Play tricking over 100,000 people into downloading the app before it was pulled. The International Business Times stated "the fake BBM client installed adware after preying upon Android users looking for the official cross-platform release of BBM or Black Berry Messenger."

According to IBN Live the fraudulent app was said by its creators to have been produced by RIM the former name of the company that made the BBM app. RIM changed their name to Black Berry in January, IBN reports.

A report by CNET about the fake Android app read,

More than 100,000 people downloaded the app, presenting them with a screen promising the app would start working on 27 June. If that didn't start alarm bells ringing, the app followed up with an agreement to allow advertising network StartApp to install icons, bookmarks, and more on your phone.

The June 27 release date was a play on a falsified Black Berry BBM release date announced by T-Mobil. The phone company announced that the iOS and Android app would be released on June 27 but Black Berry quickly squashed that announcement with an official statement.

While there have been reports that BBM will be available to iOS and Android on June 27, this is not accurate," CNET reports. "We will communicate an update as soon as we have an available date to share."

The official release date for BBM on Android and iPhone has not been announced. The company only offered a glimpse of when users may see it saying it will be out "later this summer," IBT reports. The official date will depend on when the Apple Store and Google accept the app.

The official BBM for Android will allow users to send messages as long as 2,000 characters over their data connection rather than using a standard text message. It is also suggested that BBM users will save money by taking advantage of the data connection.
