George Zimmerman, a "captain" of a neighborhood watch is accused of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in February 2012 in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman's defense team states that he shot Martin in self-defense, although the prosecutor states that Zimmerman killed Martin in cold blood, and not because he had but simply because "he wanted to."

The Zimmerman trial started with an odd array of opening statements with jokes from the defense and rambling profanity for the prosecution. The first statement read by the prosecutor, John Guy, to the all-female jury was an extensive list of expletives, directly quoting Zimmerman. "Good morning. 'F*****g punks, these a******s all get away."
Then the defense came forward and opened with a joke. "Knock knock. Who's there? George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman who? Good, you're on the jury," joked Don West, Zimmerman's defense attorney.
There was a lot of evidence proposed in the opening statements by both the defense and the prosecution, Zimmerman faces life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder for fatally shooting Martin.
