On Saturday June 29 Rosalía Palma the Mexican candidate for state legislation in Oaxaca State was wounded in the third gun assault on politicians in one week. Palma's husband and one of her campaign aides were killed in the attack.

Palma is a member of Mexico's ruling political party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI. Palma and her husband Efraín Cruz Bruno were traveling along a highway driving along with Palma's aide Talia Cruz Ibanez when gunmen opened fire.

Using R-15 assault Rifles and 9mm handguns the assailants fired a total of 35 times wounding Rosalía Palma and killing her husband and aide.

This week Mexico will hold local elections for state offices. The BBC says this is the first election in Mexico since President Enrique Penn Nieto came into office last December. Nieto said he is looking to review the country's policy on handling the fight against drug cartels.

The increase of violence against politicians forced two candidates in the state of Sinaloa to drop out of the race after a member of their party was killed.

On Thursday Nicolas Estrada, the leader of the Democratic Revolution Party or PRD was killed in a gun attack. On June 12 Jaime Orozco Madrigal the candidate for mayor of Guadalupe y Calvo was also killed. Nicolas Merino also a leader with PRD was kidnaped then murdered as part of the string of assaults

From 2006-2012 while President Felipe Calderon was in power Mexico saw a large number of deaths as a result of drug violence. 70,000 people were killed including politicians from local governments as a result of the continuing war between the cartels and the government.
