The father-in-law of the former Birmingham Striker spoke on an Ecuadorian radio show and told hosts that his son-in-law's appendicitis developed into peritonitis and led to respiratory arrest. Peritonitis is described as an inflammation of the tissue lining the inner wall of the abdomen or the peritoneum.
If peritonitis is untreated it can spread to the blood and cause sepsis. Symptoms of peritonitis include a weak appetite, nausea, a stomach ache that can develop into excruciating abdominal pain, chills, fever and vomiting.
Benitez's father-in-law said when his daughter got her husband to the hospital he was not seen right away. When the former Striker was finally seen by a doctor he was no longer responsive.
