The writers of the popular ABC show "Once Upon A Time" have collaborated once again on a spin-off series call "Once Upon A Time in Wonderland." The series will premier Thursday October 10 at 8pm. "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" will feature classic characters from "Alice in Wonderland" as well as other fairy tale and Disney characters. (1) The series will begin with Alice (Sophie Lowe) in her Victorian England home telling the people in her life about the magical land that exists down the rabbit hole. The Victorian England portrayed in the spin-off is a fictitious version and not historical. This gave writers more room to get creative without being bound to historical continuity.
Classic characters like the Cheshire cat, the Queen of Hearts and the hookah smoking caterpillar will appear in "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland". (2) Fans should not expect to see the Mad Hatter in the show's first season. The actor who portrayed the Mad Hatter, also known as Jefferson in the original series, "Once Upon A Time," is busy filming an action movie. Actor Sebastian Stan is starring as the Winter Soldier in the super hero sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Writers Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis insisted to TVLine.com they would not feature a Mad Hatter unless he were portrayed by Stan.
(3) In the premier episode of "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" Alice has already been to the magical land. Upon returning home to England and telling people about her many adventures she is thought to be crazy and sent for treatment at an asylum. Doctors concoct a cure that will erase Alice's memory of Wonderland forever. Alice is receptive to this plan because she is still hurting after losing her love, a genie named Cyrus (Peter Gadiot). As Alice is about to undergo her "cure" the white rabbit (voiced by John Lithgow) and the Knave of Hearts (Michael Socha) arrive for a dramatic rescue.
One of Disney's classic villains will make an appearance in "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland." (4) Jafar, the main bad guy from the 1992 film "Aladdin" will appear as a regular throughout the first season. "Lost" actor Naveen Andrews will bring the wicked sorcerer to life in his first US role since "Lost" ended in 2010. "I am proud and thrilled to be back with ABC on an exciting and unique new show," Andrews told Entertainment Weekly. "This role will be a real departure from any animated versions because of the layered emotions and complexities involved with making him a real three-dimensional character."
