Singer Luis Miguel has been officially named the face of tourism for the Mexican city of Acapulco in the state of Guerrero. The state's governor made the announcement earlier this week. Miguel will be featured in ads promoting the city in the hopes of getting international tourists to frequent the city. Mexican citizens will often vacation in the resort city, however recent violence within the city has kept out of country tourists away. Governor Angel Aguirre posted a photo of he and Miguel and captioned the picture with, "Luis Miguel returns to Acapulco. He will be the next face to promote our beautiful sea port."
Recent violence against tourists has seen the image of the city change. Miguel hopes to reposition that image and restore the city to its former attractiveness as a resort. In February 2013 masked gunmen raped six women from Spain vacationing in Acapulco. The six Spanish women were vacationing with an additional six men at a beach front home in the city. Masked men, believed to be gang members broke into the house, tied up the men and spent three-hours raping the six women. The city is also plagued by drug violence.
After spending over a decade without appearing in TV commercials Miguel surprised fans by accepting the offer to be the face of Acapulco. In one of his first adds Miguel shows off the beauty of the Acapulco resort towns and beaches. Happy families enjoying a meal, dancing in the streets and kids playing soccer are all highlighted in the commercial.
Luis Miguel can be considered one of the best choices for the Acapulco campaign. The 43-year-old singer is one of the most popular singers in Latin America. Also known as "El Sol de Mexico" Luis Miguel will be featured in several commercials filmed in popular restaurants and other tourist attractions.
