"You have a straightforward choice," says Maggie Smith's Violet Crawley. "You must choose either death or life." And that's how the extended trailer of "Downton Abbey" starts, bringing much more mystery and drama than the 10-second preview released last week. Although the trailer begins rather simply, the reality is more complicated than that. Matthew is dead, and there is nothing Mary can do about it now. She can either decide to just give up on life and spend the rest of her days in sorrow, or she can try instead to push forward and do something of value. This is of course what Violet encourages Mary to do, and she seems interested to go along with it.

"His death (Matthew's) clearly will make a huge difference," Gareth Neame, executive producer of the series said, "But I can assure you that it's given the show a whole new impetus. We've gone off in a whole new direction and it's very exciting to see the whole new season come together." Though Matthew will undoubtedly leave a large car shaped hole, Neame promises that the creative team has "Some great new ideas. The show's in really good health."

And in the rest of the trailer, there endless shots from the forthcoming episodes including glimpses at new characters who may serve as suitors to Lady Mary, like Jack Ross (Gary Carr) and Lord Anthony Gillingham (Tom Cullen), who are two of the more notable characters stopping by this year. So at least we know Mary went along with Violet's advice, or at least so we think.

As the trailer progresses, some of the other characters finally started to garner some attention of their own. You see a more sophisticated Lady Edith, Hugh Bonneville's Robert looking as dapper as ever, and plenty of new footage revolving all around Lily James' Lady Rose, who will have a significantly larger role this year.

The season 4 of "Downton Abbey" premieres September 22 in the United Kingdom and January 5, 2014 in the United States.
