One of Spanish music's most recognized voices has died. Manolo Escobar, known for his famous hits "El Carro," "Que viva España," "Porompompero," "Solo te pido," "Mujeres y Vino," and many others, dies this morning just days after his 82nd birthday. Escobar suffered from colon cancer. He had been admitted to a hospital in Benidorm, Spain, a few days ago, due to kidney failure, the same hospital that attended him when he suffered a small stroke days before. His nephew and agent, Gabriel García said he had overcome both conditions and was released in the following days. García said Escobar died "gently, like sleeping, while talking to his family after spending two magnificent days with them at his home."

Manuel García Escobar was born on October 19, 1931 in El Elegido, Almería, Spain and he was the fifth of a family of ten brothers. At 15 he moved to Barcelona to try his luck and after hustling for a while, his talent was finally recognized. He formed the band "Manolo Escobar and his guitars" with four of his brothers, but only three made it to the recording studio. Escobar rose to fame and traveled around the world to promote his music. Soon he also ventured in the movie industry as an actor, shooting over 20 films. He recorded over 80 albums, 24 of them reaching Gold. Manolo is survived by his wife Anita Marx and their only daughter, Vanessa.

Just recently, his Vanessa had said on a Spanish show "He feels great, he's a very positive person but he's not as strong because of the treatment. It has left him feeling a little ill. The side effects take a toll on him, especially because of his age, but emotionally he is very well, and wants to leave the hospital." Manolo still had a busy agenda with scheduled performances and appearances, that he had to cancel back in September due to his health. His wife, Anita, at the time said that those engagements would have to wait. "Chemo hurts him a lot, doctors changed it to see if suits him better, but it has been worse. However, he is in great spirits and little by little getting better."
