Marcia Wallace, better known to "The Simpsons" fans as Edna Krabappel has died after battling breast cancer. The voice actress would have been 71 on November 1st. “She passed at 9 PM last night due to complications from breast cancer of which she was a long and proud survivor and advocate for women and healing,” Cathryn Michon, a close friend, told Deadline. “Ironically it was during breast cancer awareness month during which she was always a funny ray of hope for so many. I’m devastated.” Wallace had been a breast cancer survivor for more than 20 years, she was diagnosed in 1985 and had become an activist and lecturer on the subject.

"The Simpsons" showrunner, Al Jean, is extremely saddened by the news and told EW that they will be retiring her Emmy Award winning character from the show. “I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace. She was beloved by all at The Simpsons and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character.” Her co-star Yeardley Smith who voices Lisa Simpson broke the news this morning via Twitter saying, "Cheers to the hilarious, kind, fab Marcia Wallace, who has taken her leave of us. Heaven is now a much funnier place because of you, Marcia."

Marcia Wallace was also known for starring on "The Bob Newhart Show" that made her a star. She played the character of Carol Kester, a feisty receptionist for about 139 episodes of the show from 1972 through 1978. Later on she became a regular on gameshows like "Match Game," "Hollywood Squares" and "The $25,000 Pyramid." Her last project was the upcoming movie "Muffin Top" in which Wallace co-stars alongside her son Michael Hawley and directed by her dear friend, Cathryn Michon.
