Barcelona Terror Attack

The terrorist attack of August 17, in the tourist area of ​​Las Ramblas located in the heart of Barcelona, ​​left behind the painful and irreparable loss of 14 people and more than 100 injured.

The area, where people from all corners of the world visit especially in summer time with the intention of taking advantage of the pleasant temperatures to go for a walk with their significant others, became the street of terror when a soulless outrage to hundreds of innocent people, aboard a white van that after being driven for 500 meters against the crowd left victims of 34 different nationalities, according to the Catalan authorities.

Although most of the fatal victims have not been identified, the names of two men of Italian nationality, Luca Russo and Bruno Gulotta, are among the dead, according to Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

According to CNN, a 74-year-old Portuguese woman, and a Belgian citizen died in the attack, while US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed that an American was killed. Among the wounded Hispanics, Ecuador's Foreign Ministry published in their official Twitter account that two compatriots were slightly injured. The Colombian Foreign Ministry also reported that a Colombian is injured and they are looking for a missing person.

Hours after the first attack, five terrorists frightened Cambrils, a town a few kilometers from Barcelona. During the incident, the five puppeteers were beaten and shot dead by the police. During this attack, a woman died and other people were injured.

Four people have been arrested and the driver's whereabouts are still unknown; according to the witnesses the person ran out in unknown direction. ISIS mentions the attacks in its information page, Amaq, asserting that the attackers are "soldiers of the Islamic State," but at no time they explicitly attributed the attack.

In the morning of the following day, a crowd arrived to the place of the attack where now there are tributes with flowers, candles and messages, to pay respect to the victims. The Spanish government decreed three days of national mourning.
