Birdman
"Birdman" chronicles the rise and fall of actor Riggans Thompson, played by Michael Keaton. Fox Searchlight Pictures

“Birdman” is the new film from director Alejandro González Iñárritu, and like his pervious works “Babel” and “21 Grams,” this movie, or at least is trailer is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. In a time of epic superhero movies, where Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy reigns supreme, many fans may be expecting “Birdman” to simply follow suit, with an extremely buff star transforming into the hero the world, or better yet, Hollywood’s apocalyptic prone city of New York, truly needs. But Alejandro González Iñárritu is changing directions with “Birdman” moving away from the heavy drama genre that he did so well with 2010’s “Biutiful,” the director is staying dark, but infusing this dramatic tale with a lot of comedic relief.

The three minute trailer opens with Michael Keaton, sporting an off white pair of tighty whities, meditating mid-air. Despite the Zen nature of the pose, the apartment is in complete disarray; Keaton’s gruff voice completes the scene. "How did we end up here?" Keaton states. "This place is horrible, smells like balls." The trailer continues with the absurdity, however does succeed in providing fans some background to this funny tale.

“Birdman” revolves around Riggan Thomson, played by Keaton, who is a forgotten about actor. Thomson, while washed up, is best remembered for his role portraying superhero “Birdman.” In order to catapult himself back into the spotlight, and save his already failing career, Thomson embarks on a journey to write, direct and of course star in a hit Broadway play. Joining Keaton in “Birdman” are comedy powerhouses Emma Stone, who plays Thomson’s fed-up daughter, Zach Galifianakis who’s role seems to be that of Thomson’s assistant/manager, and finally Edward Norton, who plays Thomson’s fierce rival actor.

“Birdman” premieres at the Venice International Film Festival in late August and is set to be released in theaters on October 17, 2014. Be sure to check out the extended trailer below!
