Chivas USA star, Erick “Cubo” Torres has had a breakout season for the MLS club this year and his talent has finally caught the eye of Mexican National Team Coach, Miguel Herrera. Herrera announced this weekend that he was calling up Cubo to the El Tri roster for upcoming friendlies on September 6th and 9th against Chile and Bolivia respectively.

The 21 year-old striker originally played for Chivas Guadalaraja until he was loaned out to the MLS club last summer. According to Cubo himself, the move was a turning point in his career. The striker told reporters after the announcement that he had made the El Tri roster that the change of scenery to the U.S. was much needed in his career.

“Perhaps come people didn’t believe in me and thought that I was coming here because I wasn’t needed (in Guadalajara) anymore, but I knew this was a move that would help me get back on track. It helped me concentrate, and the results are there.” He told reporters on Friday during a 30-minute conference call.

“I don’t know what would have happened if I would have stayed in Guadalajara; we don’t know if I would have this opportunity. But thanks to God, I’ve been able to do well in this strong league and it’s led me to being included on the roster for these friendlies.”

Cubo is currently third in the MLSs Golden Boot race with 14 goals. Chivas USA has struggled this season, but Cubo has shined as his 14 goals are 2/3 of the team’s entire total on the season. Since joining Chivas USA in 2013, Torres has scored 21 goals making him the highest scoring Mexican born player in MLS history ahead of Mexican legend and Chicago Fire Striker, Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

Torres wants to make an impression on Coach Herrera next month and prove that he should be a staple on Mexico’s roster for years to come. He says he has dreams of playing in Europe and eventually returning to Chivas Guadalajara where it all began. “I’ve got another two matches to get ready for the national team, and then I’ll sit down with my support group to see what my future will bring. I have the dream of playing in Europe and one day returning to the team I love, Chivas of Guadalajara. I don’t know when that will be, and right now I’m focused on what’s immediately ahead.”

Cubo will join fellow Mexican nationals, Andres Guardado, Memo Ochoa, Giovani Dos Santos, Hector Herrera and Javier Aquino on El Tri’s roster.
