The final whistle has blown on superstar couple Cristiano Ronaldo and Irina Shayk. The Portuguese soccer player confirmed the news that he had ended his 5-year relationship with his Russian supermodel girlfriend in a written statement to the Associated Press on Tuesday. “After dating for five years, my relationship with Irina Shayk has come to an end,” read Ronaldo’s words to the media. “We believed it would be best for both of us to take this step now. I wish Irina the greatest happiness.”

Ronaldo refused to delve into further details of the couple’s split, and messages we left with Ronaldo’s publicist were not returned. Rumors of the couples reported breakup originated last week when Shayk did not accompany Ronaldo to Zurich for the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or ceremony. Ronaldo took home soccer’s top individual prize for the third time, and second consecutive, but his Sports Illustrated swimsuit model girlfriend was noticeably absent. In the past, Shayk would always be on Ronaldo’s side at events of this magnitude.

Days after the ceremony, speculation was stirred even more when Shayk unfollowed Ronaldo on Twitter. According to ABC, the couple recently went on a trip to Dubai over the holidays and the vacation ended with a “massive argument” that lead to Ronaldo cutting the chord on the couples romance.

The Real Madrid striker has wasted no time getting back on his feet following the announcement as reports out of Spain have Ronaldo romantically linked with Real Madrid TV reporter, Lucia Villalon. Villanon was at the presentation ceremony in Zurich as a reporter for Real Madrid TV and was seen celebrating with Ronaldo on the private plane back from Zurich. Spanish news outlets are also running with the news that Ronaldo and Villalon are dating and further evidence could be Villalon’s absence on the sidelines from Real Madrid’s last game against Getafe on Sunday.

Normally, Villalon would travel with the team on away games to report on the match, but if she is dating the soccer star, it could be a conflict of interest and perhaps that is the reason Real Madrid TV pulled her from the game. Instead, Villanon watched from the stands and posted a picture of herself at the game. We reached out to Real Madrid TV for comment, but were told that they speak only about “sports” and not “romances.” Check out our poll below and tell us who you think Ronaldo should be dating.
