Former Red Sox star David Ortiz retired from the baseball field but it doesn't mean he will be forgotten. The American city of Boston honored Ortiz by renaming the Yawkey Way Extension to David Ortiz Drive.

In addition to the newly named street, the Dominican playoff hero has also had the Brookline Ave Bridge renamed after him. In 2016 Logan Airport named the Gate 34C as David Ortiz's gate.

According to AP, Big Papi attended the ceremony with Mayor Marty Walsh, Red Sox brass, and Boston public school students.

"David Ortiz is a legend on and off the field," Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said Thursday."This city means a lot to me," Ortiz said. "Boston has been incredible to me and my family. I love this city. I can talk about it all day."

Another ceremony will be held at Fenway Park in honor of Ortiz. The Red Sox Team plans to retire the former baseball player's number during the event scheduled for June 23.

Big Papi made his Major League debut for the Twins on September 2, 1997, and finished his career playing for the Red Sox, on November 18, 2015, with 541 home runs, and as the all-time leader in MLB history.

In May 16, Ortiz released a 272 pages memoir titled "Papi: My Story." The book includes the life of the Dominican-American star and his career in baseball. He also partnered with the John Hancock Company to get the most out of enjoying his life. As part of his campaign, Ortiz invited fans to give him ideas on how to spend his retirement now that he isn’t playing baseball.

Ortiz is married to his wife Tiffany Ortiz, and have three children.
