NEW YORK – It was a historic day for soccer in New York City as the inaugural home game for new MLS expansion team NYFC got off to a sensational start at Yankee Stadium. David Villa scored his first ever MLS goal and assisted on Patrick Mullins late goal to give NYCFC their first-ever victory 2-0 over the defending Eastern Conference Champions the New England Revolution on Sunday.

Over 43,000 people in the Bronx came out to watch New York’s newest franchise and they did not go home disappointed. Villa showed why he is the new star of the Big Apple when he scored an incredible goal in the 19th minute. Villa made a run down the left-hand side of the pitch before cutting inside for a give-and-go goal with Ned Grabavoy.

Mullins came into the game in the second half as a substitute and thanks to a great cross by Villa gave the NYCFC an insurance goal in the 84th minute when his shot just slid into the far post.

New England Revolution defender Jose Goncalves was shown a red card in the 66th minute for a rough tackle and the Revs were forced to play with 10-men for the final 30 minutes. USMNT player Max Diskerud, who scored in NYFC’s opener last week in Orlando, played well multiple passes in the midfield to Villa and Adam Nemec.
