Mental health is a serious and often times underlooked issue all over the country. With stars like Selena Gomez and Kanye West battling mental health issues, the epidemic is not as uncommon as you may think. In light of all the recent chatter in Hollywood about mental health issues, Demi Lovato has decided to open up about her issues.

According to People, Demi Lovato is continuing to share her personal journey with bipolar disorder in an effort to help others suffering from the mental health issue. The singer has been vocal about her mental health and her struggles with addiction, cutting and eating disorders since being diagnosed with bipolar disorder while receiving inpatient treatment in 2011.

“If you know someone or if you’re dealing with it yourself, just know that it is possible to live well,” Lovato, 24, told PEOPLE exclusively. “I’m living proof of that.”

The 24-year-old singer has made many strides over the last few years getting ahead of the disorder and not allowing it to control her life. While the star has a crazy schedule, she shared that dealing with her mental illness consists of taking things day-by-day with the love and support from her friends, family ans treatment team.

“They’re there for me at any moment of the day and will be there to support me throughout my recovery,” Lovato explained. “That relationship is ongoing — it’s not something where you see a therapist once or you see your psychiatrist once, it’s something you maintain to make sure that you want to live with mental illness. You have to take care of yourself.”

The star who bravely shared her journey with bipolar disorder also partnered with five mental-health organizations, called Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health, in May 2015 to reframe mental health imagery and encourage others to speak openly about mental health with their doctors, support systems, family and friends.

"This partnership means a lot to my fans because so many of my fans are dealing with mental illness, whether it’s depression or bipolar disorder or even schizophrenia,” Lovato said. “I have fans that deal with all sorts of mental illnesses so this is very important to them.”

The starlet also partnered up with Getty Images and photographer Shaul Schwarz to exhibit a more authentic, responsible portrayal of mental health in America, advocates with the initiative to eliminate the stigmas surrounding mental illnesses.

"They’re a part of a younger generation who hopefully is going to change the future for the next generation where mental illness won’t be so taboo to talk about,” she said about her fans, adding, “I want to prevent stigma from being attached from anything mental health.”

While most celebrities like to keep their health issues private, it is refreshing to see Lovato share her experience and journey with battling bipolar disorder. Many people suffer from mental illness and if we do not openly discuss the issue and support others, things can definitely spiral out of control.
