Demi Lovato 'Cosmopolitan' Cover: Singer Looks Fierce, Talks Being Jealous Of Miley Cyrus

Since being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Demi Lovato has tried to be very open about her struggles with the disease and the nightmares she faced while going through depression and substance abuse. Almost five years after checking into rehab, the singer told people magazine she’s never felt better because now she is “actually functioning like a very happy person would.”

The former Disney star managed to put her life back on track and now focuses her energy on setting a good example for all her teenage fan base out there. She even decided to take action by joining forces with 5 mental health organizations and be the advocate for “Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health,” a campaign that aims to stick together and use their voices in an effort to live well and advance mental health in America.

During her interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, Lovato opens up once again about how hard it is stay sober when you are struggling with mental illness; she even confesses she used to envy people who were able to party such as fellow Disney star Miley Cyrus, “There was a time when I was jealous of people who were able to party. For instance, Miley – in her music video ‘Can’t Stop,’ her whole thing was partying and not giving a f**k. Part of me was super jealous that I couldn’t be like that. I had to look at my life and be like, ‘Okay, that’s just not what you can do. There’s no need to be bitter about it.’”

The 22-year-old also continues to credit boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama for keeping her on the right track, and thanks him every chance she gets for not giving up on her, “We started dating when I turned 18…Right after that, I went to rehab. People told him, ‘You should probably leave. She’s on a spiral, and you’re going to be sucked down with it.’ But he was like ‘I’m not leaving. This is somebody I really care about.’ We relate on a lot of levels.”
