Did Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán escape jail for the third time?

On Friday afternoon, several news sites reported that Mexico’s most famous drug lord had escaped jail one more time. The Internet quickly reacted, with many creating memes and funny tweets over the situation. His name even became a Trending Topic.

However, no reputable media outlets were reporting on the story, Mexico’s newspapers weren’t talking about it, and none of the news agencies seemed to have the “news.”

Turns out, it was all a hoax. The last time “El Chapo” escaped jail was in 2015, when he escaped a maximum-security prison through a tunnel dug from his cell shower just over a year after he was captured for the second time.

Authorities eventually got to him in January 2016, but not before Sean Penn and Kate del Castillo got to him first and interviewed him for a potential movie deal about his life.

On Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at about 4:30 a.m., the Mexican marines attended an operative in Sinaloa that had as objective the apprehension of “El Chapo.” Seventy people raised their weapons, including organized crime personas and authorities.

Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, publicly recognized the effort of the authorities involved in the battle, where 6 people lost their lives. "I have to give recognition to the Gabinete de Seguridad del Gobierno de la República (Security Cabinet Of The Mexican Government) for this very important achievement in favor of the State in Mexico."

Although “El Chapo” hasn’t escaped for the third time, people turned to the Internet when they thought the drug lord had fled, and these are the hilarious results.
