Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simone is a very happy man today. The 44-year old Argentinian coach signed an extension with the Spanish club on Tuesday that keeps him in Madrid until 2020.

Simeone’s extension is well deserved after the head coach completely turned around a struggling Atletico program when he took over in 2011. Since he grabbed the reigns, the Atleti have won a heap of trophies including the La Liga title last year. He led Atletico to the 2012 Europa Crown, the Copa del Rey and all the way to the UEFA Champions League final last season where they lost on a last minute header to rivals Real Madrid.

As many in sports know, often times a head coach can be judged based on his record against his rivals. This aspect of a coach’s grade is most recognizable in the college game, but it’s evident at the professional level as well. Since taking over as manager, Simeone is 6-6-3 against Real Madrid in the Derby, and is 4-0-2 this season.

“I am here because I’m convinced the club will continue to grow,” he told the media of his contract extension on Tuesday. Simeone’s deal is for five years and is worth over $6 Million dollars annually, and moreover, it keeps him out of the hands of other clubs talks as he was rumored to be a target of teams like Manchester City and Arsenal among others.

“Nobody embodies the values of our club more so than Simeone,” said club president Enrique Cerezo.

Simone played for Atletico Madrid from 2003 to 2005 and retired from the sport to become a head coach in 2006. He went straight from a player to a coach with Racing in 2006, and moved on to other teams such as Estudiantes, River Plate, San Lorenzo and Catania before finding a more permanent home with Atletico.

Atletico Madrid fans and supporters made the following viral video spoofing the Lonely Island song, “Like a Boss, “ photoshopping Simeone’s head on Andy Samberg’s body to show the soccer coach celebrating his new contract extension “like a boss.” Enjoy.
