Does Sofía Vergara Exaggerate Her Accent? DFree/Shutterstock

Sofía Vergara gained fame for her role as Gloria Pritchett on ABC's hit comedy "Modern Family," but in addition to her comedic timing and acting chops, the sexy Latina is known for her glamour, undeniable beauty and her trademark accent.

Vergara's portrayal of Gloria is loved by fans, but there are some critics who accuse the Emmy nominated actress of exaggerating her accent for her role--Vergara's critics point out that simple speech classes could help the actress fade away her accent. While promoting her new fragrance, the actress addressed the issue and explained why she kept her accent in Hollywood.

“When I started acting I thought, ‘Oh, I’m going to move to Hollywood, I’m going to take the best speech class.’ I didn’t understand how Penélope Cruz and Salma Hayek had not fixed their accent,” said Vergara to WWD. “When I would go to auditions I would get super self-conscious of what I was saying, and I couldn’t concentrate on the acting. I was just concentrating on the pronunciation. One day I said, ‘This accent is never going to change … I’m going to keep trying the way I am and, if it doesn’t work, I’ll go back to the Latin market.’”

This isn't the first time Vergara has talked about her accent. In 2010, the Latina went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss her thick Colombian accent and even revealed that sometimes she cannot understand herself.

"I've been here for 16 years but I can't get rid of my accent," said Vergara on the show, four years ago, to Ellen DeGeneres. "I've tried but I'm too old! My son goes from English to Spanish like it's nothing. He's 19, he speaks perfect English he's amazing. He's so annoyed by my English he doesn't understand. He says I'm the only person in the world whose accent gets worse and worse the longer I'm here."

"Sometimes I talk and even I don't understand what I said," continued the actress. "I wait to see if the person understood, because I didn't understand. I just move on anyway."

Speaking of her accent, two years ago her son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, made a parody investigating the real accent the actress is hiding for YouTube channel NuevOn. Watch the video below.
