A Nigerian man was rushed to the ER of the General Hospital in Alicante with a fever and ‘other symptoms’ for which medics suspected a possible case of Ebola. “He had a fever over 38.8 and had been vomiting.” Due to this, the patient was quickly transferred to St. John’s hospital, which is the designated clinic for Ebola cases, where he is kept in isolation. In the meantime, samples and tests were taken and sent to Spain’s National Microbiology Centre in Madrid. Medics say the Nigerian patient remains in stable conditions and results aren’t likely to come back until early next.

Medics mentioned the patient refused to switch hospitals if his partner did not come along, so she was transported in a second ambulance to St. John’s hospital. She mentioned the patient said he had arrived in Spain “a few days ago” and while both Nigerians have been together through all of this, she was not checked in for observation, as the woman presented no symptoms. While other patients have been suspected to have the virus in Spain, none have been confirmed to have it. The deadly virus has taken over 1,100 lives in the countries affected.

Earlier this month, missioner Miguel Pajares was pronounced dead at 75 years old from contracting the virus in Liberia, where he was working in a religious hospital with patients suffering from Ebola. Pajares died after being treated with an American experimental drug known as ZMapp, which had allegedly worked for two North American patients previously. His remains were cremated without having performed an autopsy and the hospital room where he passed away was disinfected to prevent propagation of the deadly virus.
