Andrés López López is a Colombian drug lord turned bestselling author. Now the reformed cartel member will add another title to his resume as a screenwriter for Univision. The series for which Andrés López López will serve as the screenwriter is inspired by the true-life exploits of Joaquín ‘El Chapo Guzmán,’ the new series is entitled “El Varón de la Droga.” Univision

Joaquín ‘El Chapo Guzmán’ will be immortalized once even before his death in a brand new TV series premiering on UniMás, a Univision network and one of U.S.’s leading Spanish-language broadcast networks. Just announced, UniMás will be chronicling the real life exploits of Guzmán in the aptly entitled series, “El Varón de la Droga” which in English translates to “The Drug Baron.” If you are not familiar with Joaquín ‘El Chapo Guzmán,’ Forbes magazine once dubbed him the “world’s most powerful drug dealer.” Guzmán is a Mexican drug lord who leads the powerful, Sinaloa Cartel, the organization smuggles multi-ton cocaine shipments from Colombia through Mexico and then into the United States.

The cartel has also been involved in the production, smuggling and distribution of Mexican methamphetamine, marijuana, and heroin. Due to his high profile drug trade and trafficking, Guzmán was captured in 1993 in Guatemala, extradited and sentenced to 20 years in prison in Mexico. Although the “10th richest man in Mexico” easily bribed the prison guards and evaded authorities after seamlessly escaping from prison. He is wanted by the governments of Mexico and the United States and by INTERPOL, and while he may be a mystery to authorities, soon audience will be able to learn first-hand of his criminal activity and personal life.

“El Varón de la Droga” will provide audiences with an in-depth look into the life of Guzmán, while also providing an authentic view of the inner workings and politics of the drug trafficking underworld. “This new series promises to further explore the complicated and extremely dangerous life of a major drug lord beyond just the ‘business’ to the toll it takes on his personal life, and those around him," according to the Univision announcement. The authenticity of the new series is thanks to its screenwriter, former cartel member turned author, Andrés López López. López’s best-selling book “El Cartel de los Sapos” was written while the reformed drug trafficker was serving an extensive jail sentence, after his release his story garnered critical and commercial success. The new TV series will capitalize on López’s “insider perspective” creating an unmatched experience for the viewer. “I’m extremely excited to see ‘El Varón de la Droga’ being brought to the screen on UniMás,” said screenwriter Andrés López. “Their programming strategy of offering cutting-edge, alternative drama fits perfectly with the ‘ripped-from-the-headlines’ timeliness of my latest work.”
