The story of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman will soon hit the small screen thanks to a co-production series announced by Univision and Netflix. Simple titled "El Chapo," the forthcoming series is based on the life story of one of the world’s most notorious criminals from La Tuna, Sinaloa, Mexico.

The true story of "El Chapo" deals with murder, drugs, corruption and celebrities. However, the disturbing life of the Mexican drug lord who heads the Sinaloa Cartel is "one of the most fascinating of the past decades," as described by Jana Bennett, president and general manager of the History Channel.

This explains why many directors and producers are interested in telling the story of "El Chapo," including Netflix and Univision who have teamed up for an upcoming original series on the druglord.

The world’s leading Internet TV network and Univision Story House, Univision Communications Inc.’s (UCI) new development and production arm, revealed that they will co-produce a boundary-breaking drama series based on the life story of "El Chapo." The announcement was revealed at the 2016 Univision upfront held earlier this month in New York.

“‘El Chapo’ is a great example of how Univision continues to innovate and evolve with premium storytelling formats. The IP we’ve developed from more than 50 years of award-winning news and investigations gives us unique and innovative ways to tell stories in a way no other network can,” said Randy Falco, president and CEO of Univision Communications Inc. in a statement. “We are pleased to deliver this groundbreaking series to audiences in the U.S. and around the world.”

Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, agreed. “We are thrilled to partner with the award-winning Univision Story House on the timely and globally relevant drama series based on the life story of El Chapo,” he said.

“El Chapo” will be available to Netflix members in the United States following its television airing on UniMás in 2017. In the rest of the world, episodes of “El Chapo” will premiere exclusively on Netflix. Check out the first teaser of the upcoming drama series above.
