The wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, Emma Coronel Aispuro, gave her first interview ever to journalist Anabel Hernández in an-hour long Telemundo special titled “The Queen of El Chapo.” The 26-year-old beauty queen married Guzmán 8 years ago, when she was 18 and he was already 50. Despite being considered one of the most dangerous criminals in the world, Coronel Aispuro says her husband is a normal man whose life is in danger. “We don't know if he is eating well. We don't know what his situation is because we haven't seen him,” she said.

Coronel added that she has not seen her husband since his capture on January 8 and is extremely worried about the conditions he’s being kept in. “They want to make him pay for his escape. They say that they are not punishing him. Of course they are… I think that all human beings have the right to have at least the basic things — they are not giving that to him,” she said. They are there with him, watching him in his cell,” Coronel says. “They are right there, all day long, calling attendance. They don’t let him sleep. He has no privacy, not even to go to the restroom.”

When asked about what he’s like as a person, Coronel defends Guzmán and says he’s not violent at all. “He is like any other man — of course he is not violent, not rude. I have never heard him say a bad word. I have never seen him get excited or be upset at anyone,” she insisted. In addition, she dismissed all accusations of the drug lord’s brutality towards women. “He would be incapable of touching a woman with bad intentions, of trying to make her do something she didn’t want to do,” she said calmly.

Hernández asked about Guzmán’s relationship with Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, and Coronel responded she admired the actress’s work but had never met her. “Did you ever feel jealous?” Hernández inquired. “Not at all,” Coronel responded.
