Once again, Enrique Peña Nieto is opening his mouth for all the wrong reasons. Mexico’s President participated in the 2015 Molino del Rey run last weekend where he appeared to be wearing his socks backwards.

Mexican journalist Julio Astillero initiated a Twitter discussion when he pointed out that EPN seemed to be wearing his socks backwards during the 10K race in Mexico City, which he finished in 50 minutes.

Astillero’s post, which rapidly became a social media hit with the hashtag #calcetagate, gave way to all sorts of comments about the President, some stood by him, some didn’t care, and some highlighted his clumsiness.

Oddly enough, Peña Nieto decided to address the subject on his personal Twitter account by posting a picture of the socks to show it was the weird design that made it seem as if he was wearing them the wrong way. The caption which accompanied the pictures said: “Aclarando el #calcetagate” (Clarifying #calcetage).

El Presidente’s attempt to be funny and join the discussion backfired when thousands of Mexicans berated him for taking the time to talk about socks but not to address serious matters such as “El Chapo” Guzmán’s escape from prison, “Ayotzinapa,” journalists being murdered without any explanation, among others.

Way to go Mr. President!
