Eugenio Derbez was giving an interview next to Eduardo Yáñez when the latter attacked an "El Gordo y La Flaca" reporter by slapping him. The Mexican comedian was unphased by the incident and is now coming out to defend Yáñez as he says Paco Fuentes had it coming. “I don’t know what really happened but what I can tell you is that there are always two sides,” he told “Ventaneando” after the aggression had taken place. “I saw that [the reporter] started poking and poking and there are actors that are more vulnerable than others and he reacted that way. (Laughs)”

Derbez echoed the same thoughts today on Javier Poza's radio show. "Eduardo and I were shoulder to shoulder, you are the first person I talk about this (which was not entirely correct as he had previously talked to 'Ventaneando') and I think you will be the only one as I don't like to create controversy. I will say one thing, I arrived and I saw Eduardo, I was going to greet him but I saw that he was giving an interview and I started to do my interview getting distracted by what was going on."
"I don't justify violence nor Eduardo's attitude, but I am mad at how the reporter started poking at him. I said I saw it coming, but I didn't think that he was going to hit him. I saw it coming and I thought to myself, 'Eduardo will get mad soon'. The reporter was very incisive, he was being bothersome. [Eduardo] first said, 'I don't talk about my private life', he tried to dodge [the questions] and [the reporter] continued insisting."
Following the violent act, the Spanish-language network issued a statement condemning the violent act. "Univision News, the award-winning news division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), the leading media company serving Hispanic America, condemns the act of violence perpetrated on October 10 by Eduardo Yáñez on Univision reporter Paco Fuentes", the statement reads. "Univision News demands respect for the physical safety of its reporters and expresses complete disapproval of any senseless act of violence against them. Censorship and acts of violence against journalists are reproachable no matter the source."
Since the attack on Paco Fuentes, Eduardo Yáñez has come out and apologized for his aggression. "I want to ask for a sincere apology to the public and the person affected by my action. It was not right. My private life is not for sale." After the apology he went on to attack Jorge Ramos on the same social network. "Nothing, never, nowhere, justifies aggression against a journalist, coming from an actor, a president, or government. Don't normalize the violence," the Univision news anchor wrote. Yáñez replied: "Yes, it's because you guys are untouchable."
Paco Fuentes was at an event in L.A. when he interviewed Eduardo Yáñez for "El Gordo y La Flaca" and asked about his son that publicly tweeted a GoFundMe account to crowdfund for a car and medical expenses. Eduardo said that Fuentes was disrespecting him and slapped him when he reached his boiling point. Paco did not retaliate and was reportedly taken to the hospital to get examined by a doctor and make sure he was fine.
