Now when you click that 'like' button or friend your favorite celeb on the popular social networking site Facebook you will know if it's actually them thanks to the new verified account feature.

Facebook is now making it possible to verify celebs and other high-profile people and companies.

The feature will consists of a small blue checkmark sitting next to their name so when you go to check out famous figure, such as Selena Gomez, George Takei or Facebook's own Mark Zuckerberg, they will see a blue circle icon to the right of the person's name with a white checkmark in the middle which will indicate that the page belongs to person you are trying to follow.

Facebook wrote that not everyone can have a verified page saying:

Verified Pages belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists ,government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences. This update is rolling out to profiles as well.

Facebook is following in the footsteps of other popular social networking sites. Much like the feature Twitter has for verified pages and now even Google+ with their custom vanity URL's.

Google+ offers high-profile people, celebs and companies the option to have a vanity URL. The custom URL is in an indication that the page actually belongs to the individual and not just a fan so if your perhaps soccer star David Beckham your Google+ vanity URL will look like this, "google.com/+davidbeckham." Here is what google had to say about it.

At first, we're introducing custom URLs to a limited number of verified profiles and pages. But over time we plan to offer custom URLs to many more brands and individuals, so please stay tuned!

Right now it appears that Facebook is taking it upon itself to determine who to verify but it's still a good way weed through the fake and real accounts.
