Prince Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper is claiming a set at the King's small council, representing House Martell. The Lannisters will soon learn that the Martell's house words, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" are more than just a well known motto. HBO

“Game of Thrones” premiered its Season 4 trailer last night before HBO’s all new crime series “True Detective” and while the new series was thrilling to watch, I was personally most delighted by the 2 minute trailer! Providing fans with the first look at the highly anticipated Season 4, the audience was left with just as many answers as questions. In addition to catching our first glimpse of returning characters, namely the Lannisters and of course the newly reigning Queen of Meeren, Daenerys Targaryen, fans were delighted to see an unfamiliar in face in Kings Landing, and better yet, he is facing off with the ruling family. "Tell your father I'm here, and tell him the Lannisters aren't the only ones who pay their debts." Anyone who challenges Tywin Lannister is okay in my ledger, but just who is the mysterious man?

Meet the Red Viper, who is known royally as Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne. And he is a major reason why Season 4 of “Game of Thrones” will be a tumultuous and vengeful ride. Fans of the hit fantasy series have heard of the city of Dorne before, however all references have been in reference to the city’s delectable wine and allegedly even more delectable women. But in Season 4, King’s Landing is welcoming its gates to the city of Dorne for more than just wine, the Red Viper arrives at the capital to claim a seat on the small council. The Red Viper has come in place of his elder and ailing brother Doran Martell, who is the reigning Lord of Sunspear in Dorne. The appearance of the Martells in King’s Landing was begrudgingly arranged by Tyrion Lannister, when he was acting as Hand of the King, now the title has been transferred over to his father. Who is even less thrilled to host his enemies at his table. But in line with necessary politics, Tywin attempts to be municipal. But this civil behavior between powerful houses ends quickly. If you couldn’t tell from the trailer, there is some seriously spoiled blood between the Red Viper and Tywin Lannister. Oberyn makes clear from the beginning of his time in King’s Landing that he is present for one reason- to obtain justice for his sister, niece and nephew.

Oh how the plot thickens, Oberyn is the brother of Elia Martell who married the crown price, Rhaeger Targaryen. During the sack of King’s Landing, led by Lannister forces, Elia was brutally raped and murdered at the hands of a notable Lannister bannerman, Ser Gregor Clegane. In addition to the death of Elia, Tywin Lannister, in an attempt to ensure the Lannister loyalty, ordered the deaths of Rhaegar and Elia's young children, Rhaenys and Aegon. While the world of Westeros seems to know just who killed the family in the Red Keep, the Lannisters enjoy unleashing their “barking dog” Clegane on anyone who opposes them, therefore they attempted to blame his atrocious crime on another. As Season 4 progesses, the truth will be revealed, and by one of the Lannisters own. With cold vengeance in his heart, the Red Viper plans to finally reveal his dear sister’s true murderer and proclaim justice for her in the name of Dorne. Armed with a spear and some exceptionally stealthy maneuvers, not even a mountain can stand between him and justice.

Prince Oberyn Martell will be played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal, who has previously appeared on CBS' The Good Wife, ABC's Red Widow and USA's Graceland.
