Daenerys Targaryen and her largest dragon Drogon in HBO's TV series "Game of Thrones." The show is based on George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels. HBO

“Game of Thrones” is known for having shocking reveals, and killing off pretty much every major character. Luckily the HBO series has the largest ensemble cast on TV and is constantly adding more characters to the already crowded central storyline. The series infamous “Red Wedding” was the modern equivalent to the shot heard around the world. So when director Alex Graves revealed that the Season 4 finale will be the biggest shock yet, we were intrigued. Not that we are doubting of the shock and awe ability of “Game of Thrones." There is left much to uncover in George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, which the show is based off of, but how much bigger can it get? Apparently fans haven’t seen anything yet because according to Graves the Season 4 finale is “the big one.”

Let’s break down the series past shocking episodes, interestingly enough “Game of Thrones,” which is in its fourth season seems to be shaking up its episode structure. The 10 episode seasons have stayed consistent, but normally the big shock and nearly unforeseeable plot twist occurs in episode 9, leaving episode 10, the season finale, to provide more of a conclusive ending. In Season 1 episode 9, “Baelor” Ned Stark was beheaded by the now deceased Joffrey Baratheon, leaving his two daughters essentially orphaned and alone in King’s Landing. Then in Season 2, episode 9 showcased the notorious “Battle Of Blackwater Bay.” The Lannisters employed the deadly and catastrophic use of wildfire to protect the capital and their rule, and decimate Stannis’s fleet, burning most of men alive. Finally in Season 3, fans were devastated in episode 9 “Rains of Castamere” when Robb and Catelyn Stark were brutally murdered at the Red Wedding.

Despite the success of the series’ “episode 9 format” it is going to change for Season 4. Alex Graves, who directs the Season 4 finale, told the Huffington Post, “Wait till you see episode 10. The finale is really a finale. It’s not the episode after episode nine, it’s the big one.” Bigger than the Red Wedding? At first I thought it impossible! Then I considered the episode title “The Children,” which I then compared to Season 3 finale title “Mysha” and began to get an indication of what fans can expect. “Mysha” which translates to “mother” was the term given to Daenerys Targaryen after liberating the slaves in Essos. So it’s safe to say that the Season 4 finale “The Children” plays off of that comparison. However, fans should remember that Daenerys received a prophecy that her womb will never bear a living child, but she is the Mother of Dragons. So the Season 4 finale, “The Children” most certainly will revolve around Daenerys and her dragons whom she considers her children. After listening to what Graves described for the Season 4 finale, our dragon theory seems even more likely.

“It’s by far the largest episode that they’ve ever made,” Alex says. “The tectonics and the story are the largest that have ever happened, and that’s not counting the x-number of battle sequences, x-number of gigantic digital effects sequences, and x-number of how many characters are alive and standing and even on the continent when it’s over. It’s a big one.”

What do you think is in store for the Season 4 finale? Do you agree with our Daenerys and dragons theory or do you think “The Children” is referring to something else? Comment below and let us know!
