The Golden State Warriors might want to hire a new architect, unless that is they plan to name their new arena in downtown San Francisco, the “Toilet Bowl.” The Warriors released architectural renderings last month showing their concept for their proposed 18,000 seat stadium that would relocate the team from Oakland to the heart of downtown San Francisco.

In order to break ground on the new arena and have the 12 acre lot where the building would be constructed approved by the Mission Bay Citizens Advisory Committee, the Warriors and the city needed to present the drawings below. The architect for the proposed project is Manica Architecture, and since the release of the drawings, the firm has felt the wrath of social media.

In order to diffuse the onslaught of jokes and memes that followed, a Warriors spokesperson flushed the dreams of the “Toilet Bowl” arena down the drain as he cautioned everyone that the drawings were not final, but merely a “work in progress” and “designed to facilitate the feedback from the community we’re engaged in at the moment.”

“We are still very much in the design phase,” said the spokesperson. “More detailed renderings are still to come.”

As far as the move from Oakland to San Francisco, the team has been seeking a move for many years. Despite calling Oakland home since 1966, the Warriors actually started in San Francisco in 1962. They were originally known as the San Francisco Warriors at that time, but changed their name to the Golden State Warriors shortly after moving to Oakland. The team would like to move to the part of the city known as Embarcadero, which is located underneath the Bay Bridge. It is unknown whether or not the Warriors would change their name back to the San Francisco Warriors if the move occurs.

Thus far, the Warriors and the city have had tremendous push back on their proposed move. The Embarcadero move was pushed back last year, and ultimately will be scrapped after residents in the area did not want a huge arena with multiple buildings and skyscrapers to change the look and feel of the neighborhood.

Earlier this year, the Warriors purchased land adjacent to UC San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus and those are the drawings you see below. The plans call for the new arena in addition to a small plaza area as well as multiple structures surrounding the facility. I hope they make the building of porcelain so we can have fun with nicknames for the arena, “the Porcelain Palace” or the “Golden Throne,” are among our personal favorites.
