Season 11 of “Grey’s Anatomy” may only be 4 episodes in, however the season is already changing up with the cast with actress Kelly McCreary being promoted to a series regular. Though not a designated “series regular” cast mate, McCreary has been a recurring character since the season 10 finale as Dr. Maggie Pierce. Maggie was revealed to be the half-sister of Dr. Meredith Grey; the sisters share their mother, Ellis, through her extramarital relationship with Richard, played by actor James Pickens Jr.

The first few episodes of Season 11 have focused on Maggie, fans watched as she made the move from Boston to Seattle, on a journey to discover more about the mother she never truly knew. After being hired at Grey Sloan Memorial as the head of cardiothoracic surgery, Maggie’s desire to discover more about her biological family was finally realized, however the result may not have been what she was initially expecting. Meredith originally didn’t believe her half-sister about her mysterious parentage, and refused to accept her. The two sisters went head to head after Meredith went to Owen to report Maggie, who let a patient intentionally die. Following this altercation, Maggie turned to her only ally, her father.

But in episode 4 the family made their way back together over the one thing that ties them together, Ellis. The sister bonded over their mother’s old journal, and now Meredith has finally accepted Maggie as part of her family. So now with the recent casting news fans should expect Maggie and Meredith to be in each other lives for even longer. It seems that actress Kelly McCreary is excited about her role on the series, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "I really love playing Maggie, I think she's so much fun. I've been given some really great material and I'm really enjoying exploring her relationships.”

Even before being promoted to a series regular, McCreary realized that her character was going to be a large part of Season 11. "There's a lot to play out. I would like to see her stay as long as it takes for all of those relationships to run their course; whether it's another couple episodes or seasons, it's in the hands of the writers and I trust them completely."
