Following the November release of "GTA 5" for PS4 and Xbox One, Rockstar Games announced that the next title update for GTA Online will be the long-awaited Heists DLC. Given the recently leaked information regarding a Holiday DLC featuring Christmas-themed items and gradient snowfall, we speculated that the "GTA 5" Heists Update release date would coincide with a Holiday DLC on Tuesday, Dec. 23, the day before Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, Rockstar finally announced in its latest Newswire that GTA Online Heists will not arrive until 2015.

"GTA Online Heists are coming early in 2015 - check out the new trailer for the four-player co-op mode for Grand Theft Auto Online that allows players to plan, prepare and execute multi-tiered Heists across Los Santos and Blaine County," reported the Rockstar Newswire. "These will require tight communication and coordination, with players taking on specified roles at each point to accomplish multiple objectives on the way to each Heist’s epic finale. Featuring new gameplay, new vehicles, new weapons, new clothing and much more."

Unfortunately, "early 2015" doesn't necessarily mean that the "GTA 5" Heists Update will arrive by January either. That said, the latest Rockstar Newswire announcement and one-minute official trailer has at least revealed new information regarding the big DLC.

In an interview with IGN, GTA Online producer and lead mission designer Imran Sarwar went over a number of things about the Heists DLC, particularly the new elements of gameplay that it will deliver. According to Sarwar, the Heists update was more conceptually and technically difficult than the team originally thought. The Heists Update was intended to deliver Story Mode missions to GTA Online that would create a new level of multiplayer co-op gameplay. Heist missions will feature multi-tier set-ups and also provide distinct roles that will make all four players feel as if their role truly had a stake in the heist's outcome.

"A good example is the classic idea of your getaway driver, waiting outside of a bank for the big score. A movie might not spend too much time focusing on that person because while they are waiting, we are watching the action going down in the vault," explained Sarwar. "In a similar situation in Story Mode, we could use a character switch to make sure the player was always in the center of the action and switch back to the driver later. But to make this work for multiple players, we needed to create situations where the driver has something interesting to do at exactly the same time the rest of their team are locking down the bank and making their way to the money."

The heist missions will not be available for GTA Online players until they have reached a rank of 12 or above. Next, four players will make up a squad, while one player will take the role as the heist leader. Heist leader have the unique ability to choose members of the crew, assign positions, pick outfits, and allocate player's pay cut.

It may seem unfair for a heist leader to allocate a bigger cut of the loot, but GTA Online is curving the issue by forcing the heist leader to also front the set-up costs necessary to successfully pull off the heist. An additional perk for crew members is a csah payout for each prep mission. However, the leader will not receive a payout until a heist is completed in its entirety. For a more dynamic GTA Heists experience, Imran Sarwar also encourages players to experience all the different crew member roles.
