LOS ANGELES – Harrison Ford is in serious condition on Friday morning after the single-engine World War II airplane he was flying on Thursday afternoon, experienced engine failure shortly after takeoff from Santa Monica airport. The Star Wars and Indiana Jones actor tried to return to the airport, but it was too late and he instead crash-landed the plan on the 8th tee of a nearby golf course.

Ford is an experienced pilot, who this writer has met numerous times at Camarillo Airport while obtaining his private pilot’s license. From an aviation perspective, the actor did everything right. He reported the loss of engine power to air-traffic controllers and immediately requested permission to return to the airport. Once he knew he was unable to reach the runway, Ford looked for the safest clearing located in proximity to him with the least amount of civilians and casualties. Despite, reportedly clipping a few trees on the way down, nobody was hurt or killed in crash other than Ford himself.

“Harrison was flying a World War 2 vintage plane today which had engine trouble upon takeoff,” his publicist Ina Treciokas said in a statement on Thursday evening. “He had no other choice but to make an emergency landing, which he did safely. He was banged up and is in the hospital receiving medical care. The injuries sustained are not life threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery.”

Ford’s vintage plane had an open-cockpit which could have been fatal for the actor had the plane rolled or landed upside down. In a twist of divine intervention, a Doctor was playing on the golf course, saw Ford’s plane crash and immediately helped drag the actor from the wreckage where he assisted him until paramedics arrived.

“Dad is okay. Battered, but ok!” said Ford’s son, Ben, who tweeted the good news from the hospital. “He is every bit the man you would think he is. He is an incredibly strong man.”

Other celebrity reactions poured in over Twitter as news of the crash went public.
