'HBO Now' deal with Apple rumored ahead of "Game Of Thrones" Season 5 air date. HBO

HBO and Apple are currently working on a deal to deliver premium TV programs to Apple TV. The latest service, known as "HBO Now" will be a standalone service that will allow customers to purchase HBO content directly, rather than via a cable or satellite TV provider like Comcast or Verizon.

The old business model relied on customers to fork over a premium Cable TV bundle subscription in order to gain access to HBO. In the new outline, HBO Now could be distributed over Apple TV as well as Roku box, Xbox, Playstation, Amazon, and more. According to CEO Jeff Bewkes, HBO Now could potentially draw 10 million U.S. subscribers.

The HBO Now service is slated to launch in April, which will coincide with the highly anticipated return of "Game of Thrones" Season 5. No doubt, the timing of the product launch makes the HBO Now proposal an extremely lucrative opportunity for both HBO and Apple.

At $15 a month, HBO Now is significantly more expensive than Netflix services. That said, HBO is highly confident that its high-quality original programming makes for a strong and exclusive media library that Netflix cannot.

Stay tuned as we expect to learn more about the new HBO New standalone service in the month ahead.
