Prince Charles gave Princess Diana and Camilla Parker Bowles two different engagement rings, which might have proved whom he loved more between the two. Royal fans recently discussed the two engagement rings amid reports that Meghan Markle had hers changed.

Tamara Walsh, a retired dean, said that Prince Charles obviously didn’t love Princess Diana as much as he loved Camilla because he simply handed her a catalog and asked her to choose her own engagement ring. Princess Diana ultimately chose one from Garrard.

However, the royal fan also said that there’s not much information released about Camilla’s engagement ring. As such, it is also quite difficult to say what the piece of jewelry really meant to Prince Charles. What is only known is that Camilla didn’t choose her engagement ring from a catalog.

Chris Smith corrected Walsh’s statement by saying that Prince Charles did not literally hand Princess Diana a catalog of rings to choose from. Rather, he had an entire selection brought to the palace. It just so happened that Princess Diana picked out the largest one from the list.

“Most men will go ring shopping with their girlfriends to ask her the design she would like, at least,” the royal fan said. “Charles couldn’t do that as the press would have been all over them so he did the next best thing — had the jewelers send over a selection. They also had the privacy during the selection that most couples don’t get when they go ring shopping,” he added.

Microbiologist Susan Townsend Day said that she believes Camilla’s engagement ring meant a great deal to Prince Charles simply because it was previously owned by his grandmother, the Queen Mother. Prince Charles and the Queen Mother shared a very close relationship when the latter was still alive.

“I understand that she was very close to Prince Charles — perhaps filled in those times that his mother was busy traveling and being Queen,” she said. The Queen Mother passed away on March 30, 2002, at the Royal Lodge. She reportedly died in her sleep, and Queen Elizabeth II was beside her.
