As if Jamaal Charles’ season couldn’t get any worse, it just did.

The Chiefs have announced that Charles’ injured knee will require another surgery thus sidelining him for at least another eight weeks. Charles has only appeared in three games this year, and at best, he could play the season finale against the San Diego Chargers in Week 17. This has been without a doubt the most frustrating year for Charles in the NFL due to injuries, who obviously hasn’t fully recovered from last year’s torn ACL.

This will mark the fifth consecutive season in which Charles’ rushing yardage has declined.

Still, even with Charles out, Spencer Ware has helped fill an important void. Ware already has a career high 511 rushing yards this season with nine games remaining. Considering the circumstances, Ware has been one of the Chiefs most valuable players this year. The Chiefs have won their last three games and are in the middle of a huge fight in the AFC West with the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders.

Charles won’t help the Chiefs anymore this regular season, unless he can stun everyone and make a huge difference in Week 17, but it’s critical that he gets healthy for the postseason. Head Coach Andy Reid has a proven track record of winning despite having injured players.

It’s important to note that Knile Davis is an unrestricted free agent. Just two weeks ago the Chiefs traded Davis to the Green Bay Packers for a seventh round draft pick, but the Packers chose to cut him shortly after. The New York jets gave Davis a quick look, but chose not to keep him as well. Don’t be surprised if the Chiefs bring Davis back considering Charles’ setback.
