Jorge Arvizu 'El Tata' Dead At 81

Jorge Arvizu the legendary Mexican comic known as "El Tata" has passed away at the age of 81. The actor suffered from heart failure this morning (March 18) and died. Arvizu had been hospitalized in January after they found a blockage in the carotid artery and remained in the Intensive Care Unit. "An institution of acting and voice over in Mexico has left us, but his legacy will remain with us," Arath De La Torre wrote on Twitter. Arath had the fortune of working with him in the political satire comedy "El Privilegio De Mandar." De La Torre added, "may you rest in peace great friend and inspiration to many. Don Jorge Arvizu, thank you for your legacy and love."

"El Tata" is how Jorge Arvizu became known has after his emblematic character of a grumpy old man in "La Criada Bien Criada." Arvizu was one of the greatest voice-over actors and has an impressive resume voicing some of the classic cartoons in television. One of his most famous characters he dubbed in Spanish were Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble from "The Flintstones" and Benny (or Benito) from "Top Cat." Other characters included Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in "Looney Tunes," Popeye in "Popeye," Quincy Magoo in "Mr. Magoo," Felix in "Felix The Cat," Ringo Starr in the various The Beatles films and cartoons as well as Maxwell Smart in the "Get Smart" television show and film. His most recent work includes Chef Skinner in "Ratatouille" and Ramón in "Cars."

Celebrities have reacted to Jorge Arvizu's death as he will be dearly missed. "My soul hurts," Laura Flores wrote on Twitter. "We worked together in 'Sugar' in 1992 with Eduardo Palomo (R.I.P.) and Coque Muñiz." Fellow comedian Raquel Pankowsky said, "My dear Jorge Arvizu 'El Tata" died. Horrible news, may he rest in peace." Héctor Sandarti: "A great man has left us, marvelous actor but above all a master of voice over for decades." Joaquín López-Dóriga: Jorge Arvizu, 'El Tata,' passed away. A complete character of comedy. My condolences to his family."
