The capillary industry, like so many others in New York City, is quite competitive. Only the best make their way into a sea of hairstylists and mark the difference with their talent.

With clients such as Kesha, Gina Gerahon, Lindsay Lohan, Mia Moretti, Rosanna Arquette and even the HRH Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia, this hair professional, originally from Mexicali, Mexico, but educated in California where he went to hair school, became an important figure in the New York scene.

Jorge Luis, tells exclusively to Latin Times that he always felt passionate about the Big Apple, and when he decided to move definitively in April 1996, he knew it was the right thing to do. "It just felt right! Since I was a young teenager I felt the fascination with New York."

After his arrival, Jorge Luis immediately begins to trace his path. "I was determined to work with, whom It was back then, the hottest colorists, Louis Licari and Brad Johns," comments the hairstylist. "I remember I used to dress all black, it was like the official uniform in New York in the 90's. I got both beauty salons interviewed me. Then I was hired as an assistant in both but I decided to choose the one that I considered most convenient for me."

After working unachievably, the stylist had his breakthrough moment when he had the opportunity to offer his service to the founder editor in chief of InStyle magazine. "I always say discipline and hard work will always pay off," confesses Jorge Luis to Latin Times. "One day I meet the founder editor in chief of InStyle magazine, I started styling her for a while until she took me under her wing."

After so important moment, Jorge began to travel next to her, to every award and the biggests after parties for InStyle. During 10 wonderful years the now famous stylist was her go to guy. Attending important events such as the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Grammys, Emmys and The Oscars, Jorge Luis was able to meet influential people in the industry.

One of those important people he met was one of the most influential hairstylists of the 90's, the founder and owner of PRIVE Salons. Working in the beauty salon, Jorge went from being a colorist to then became the artistic director for the products.

As a result of the increasing Jorge Luis popularity, he became the lead hair stylist in NYFW. Working in high caliber shows like Son Jung Wan, Donna Karan's Urban ZEN, Daisy Fuentes, Noon by Noor, Claire Pettibone, and much more. His work has also been featured in prestigious publications such as Vanity Fair, People En Espanol, Nylon, Uptown Magazine, Beauty Launchpad, Estetica Magazine and La Palme.

  • Jorge Luis also shares his steps on how to become a leading hairstylist for New York Fashion Week:
  1. Do your homework: When a designer does not work you approach a research to get inspiration.
  2. Build a relationship with designers: It's important to know who you are dealing with, sometimes people are very private and we should respect that. Sometimes they are very social. You can not assume right away it's the friendship, but most of the time you'll start a wonderful journey with them.
  3. Study the many ways to work a look: Every show is different, sometimes designers will send inspiration boards, or sometimes they will show the collection to the hairstylist. Sometimes they already know what they want.

Currently, Jorge Luis is dividing his time between the prestigious Sharon Dorram/Sally Hershberger Salon in Uptown NY and freelancing in Soho.
