Last Saturday journalist Jorge Ramos, host of "Al Punto" on Univision (Spanish), and "America" on Fusion TV (English), both transmitted in the United States, posted a series of messages and photos from a visit to the area of the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo on the Mexican side) to address the issue of migrant children being detained at the border. Ramos, who has spent several weeks doing interviews and analysis pieces about it, aired the report on Fusion last night.

Ramos' 'Swim Across the Rio Grande' aimed to show the dangers children are exposed to as undocumented crossers. With support of Border Patrol agents, he toured the area and then did some interviews with children. However, Ramos plan backfired to some extent as a number of people reacted negatively on social media, attacking Ramos for suggesting he could replicate the difficult crossing on TV.

As Cuaderno Doble Raya points out: "Instead of having lots of cameras trained on them, [these children] usually have rifles pointed at them. And if they drown, they do not have the insurance policy that Ramos has." Notwithstanding, Ramos has a point to make. "Deporting kids won't solve anything," he writes on Fusion. "The only long term plan that will work is immigration reform. With immigration reform these children would arrive in a safe and orderly way."
