Monsignor Krzysztof Charamsa is causing worldwide controversy after he came out in Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper. Charasma, 43, told the publication that he was gay and had a partner during an interview published on Saturday.

Although the Vatican has recently stated that homosexuality is not considered a sin, priests, whether heterosexual or gay, are meant to remain celibate. On the eve of a major Church meeting on Saturday, the Vatican dismissed the priest from his Holy See job.

Previous to the event, Charamsa had convoked a gathering next to his partner, a Spanish man whose name has not been given, and gay activists, in which they intended to have a demonstration in front of the Vatican but changed the venue several hours before.

The Vatican informed that Charamsa’s dismissal had nothing to do with his personal choices but the fact that he went public and planned the demonstration, which they say, was “grave and irresponsible.”

During the news conference, the Polish priest stated, “This decision of mine to come out was a very personal one taken in a Catholic Church that is homophobic and very difficult and harsh (towards gays),” he said.

He also addressed Pope Francis and encouraged him to finally embrace the LGBT community, “I ask the Pope to be strong and to remember us, homosexuals, lesbians, transsexuals and bisexuals as children of the Church and members of humanity.”
