LOS ANGELES – Robbie Keane has finally won the elusive MVP crown that he coveted for years. Just days before his team the LA Galaxy suit up against the New England Revolution in the MLS Cup Championship, Keane was named the 2014 Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player.

“When you play the game you want to do the best that you can for yourself and for the team,” said Keane during the MLS presentation ceremony at the Ritz Carlton in Los Angeles. “To get this award is a great privilege, I want to thank the people who voted. It’s so nice to be recognized by your peers, thank you very much.”

The 34-year-old was a finalist last year and joked with us earlier in the season that every year we tout Keane as MVP, and every year he doesn’t win. He’s never been much for individual honors, but this year his numbers were off the charts as he scored 19 goals with 14 assists to lead the LA Galaxy to the MLS Cup.

Keane beat out New England midfielder, Lee Nguyen (18 goals) and Seattle Sounders striker, Obafemi Martins (17 goals and 13 assists). Keane became the first Galaxy MVP since Landon Donovan in 2009.

Keane who’s career was in jeopardy coming into the season with Achilles troubles, underwent surgery in the offseason that has revitalized his health and his career. Keane is Ireland’s all time leading scorer with 65 goals and transferred to the Galaxy in 2011 after playing most of his career in the English Premier League. He currently ranks in the top 10 of goal scorers in EPL history.

Keane has always prided himself on his consistency on the pitch. Increasing his stats every year as he remains a vocal leader in the locker room and with his play on the pitch as well.

“To be in the running the last few years, it just goes to show how consistent I have been,” said Keane. “I’m delighted with the award, but I’d certainly trade it in for a championship on Sunday.”

The Galaxy will play for their third championship in four years when they play in Sunday’s MLS Cup final at StubHub Center. The game can be watched live on ESPN at 3:00 EST.
