If you’re a diehard sports fan, this Labor Day weekend offers some of the best sporting events of the year. While most of America is busy travelling this weekend, those at home can pull up a seat on the couch, grab a bag of chips and enjoy one of the best sports weekends of the year.

No matter what sport is your favorite, Labor Day weekend has something for you. It’s the opening weekend of College Football where last year’s Champions, the Florida State Seminoles led by Heisman trophy winner, Jameis Winston, open their 2014 campaign against a tough Oklahoma State team. If you’re a tennis fan, Flushing Meadows may be your destination of choice as the third round of both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments at the U.S. Open are on full display. The PGA’s Deutsche Bank Championship is underway in Boston and the MLB playoff race is heating up with less than thirty games to go in the season.

If you’re a racing fan, Tony Stewart makes his return to the track this Labor Day weekend in Atlanta, just three weeks after killing Sprint car driver, Kevin Ward Jr. on a dirt track in New York. If you’re like most of the world and soccer is your sport of choice, wake up early on Sunday for some English Premier League action as well as some potential playoff implications in the MLS.

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays

The Yankees and Blue Jays meet for a three game series over the weekend with tremendous playoff implications on the line. The Blue Jays find themselves two and a half games behind the Yankees for second place in the AL East, but more importantly, both teams are fighting for the last AL Wild Card spot with the Yankees three games back to the Blue Jays six.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

One of the oldest and most historic rivalries in baseball takes to the diamond over the weekend when the Cubs and Cardinals meet in St. Louis. The two teams first played in 1892 and since then, have met over 2,300 times. The Cubs are currently in last place in the NL Central, but the Cardinals are fighting for the division and a playoff spot as they are just 1.5 games behind the division leading Milwaukee Brewers.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres

The battle in the National League for Southern California bragging rights begins this weekend in San Diego. Both the Dodgers and the Padres have huge Latino followings and this weekend will showcase one of the best pitchers in MLB when Zack Grienke takes the mound on Saturday. Hyun-Jin Ryu is set to come off the disabled list and make his first start since injuring a muscle in his buttocks. The Dodgers must continue their winning ways over the Labor Day weekend as they are currently clinging to first place in the NL West over the rival San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers are also locked into a battle for home field advantage in the playoffs as they currently are one game behind the Washington Nationals for the best record in the National League.

Oakland Athletics at Los Angeles Angels

First place in the American League West is on the line as the A’s and Angels lock up for three in Anaheim. Both teams have been the class of baseball for the entire season, and have the best records in baseball respectively. The Angels currently lead their rivals to the North by three games. The A’s made many moves at the trade deadline, requiring Sam Fuld, Jon Lester and Jeff Samardzija. The Angels countered with Huston Street, Jason Grilli, and Gordon Beckham, but will need all the help they can get in this crucial series as they lost their ace pitcher, Garrett Richards earlier in the week.

The Deutsche Bank Championship

The PGA tees off this weekend from TPC Boston in the Deutsche Bank Championship. With the season winding down, and the FedEx Cup standings heating up, many of the top golfers in the world will meet over Labor Day weekend as they try and claim some of the $8 Million dollar purse. Last year’s champion, Henrick Stenson, highlights a field of Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson.

NASCAR Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta

The Atlanta Motor speedway marks the return of Tony Stewart to the track just a few weeks after killing fellow driver Kevin Ward Jr. Stewart was emotional speaking to the media on Friday, and said he will be affected by this tragedy for the rest of his life. With less than a month remaining in the Sprint Cup season, every race counts as Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Jimmie Johnson all jockey for position atop the leaderboard as the chase for the cup heats up.

Third Round Coverage of the U.S. Open

The 3rd round of the Men’s and Women’s open tournaments at Flushing Meadows will showcase some of tennis’ top players over the Labor Day weekend. Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and the Williams sisters (Venus and Serena) are just some of the stars taking the hard court over the weekend.

Clemson Tigers at Georgia Bulldogs

College Football kicks off in a major way this weekend as the #12 Georgia Bulldogs take on the #16 ranked Clemson Tigers. Both teams are excited to start their seasons on high notes as each team knows that they need a win in Athens on Saturday to have any hope of making the four team playoff in the inaugural year of the BCS Championship playoff format. Look for Georgia running back Todd Gurley to have a big game for the Bulldogs while Clemson will look to fill the void after the departures of Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins.

Fresno St. Bulldogs at USC Trojans

The Los Angeles memorial coliseum will be rocking this Labor Day weekend when the rematch from last season’s Las Vegas Bowl showcases the elite from the Pac 12 and Mountain West respectively. Fresno State has revenge on their minds after getting blown out in Las Vegas, while the Trojans will look to kick off the Steve Sarkisian era with a victory.

Wisconsin Badgers vs. LSU Tigers

Another great matchup between the SEC and the Big Ten gets underway when #14 Wisconsin takes on #13 LSU at NRG stadium in Houston, TX. The matchup could showcase two teams who could play in the BCS Championship playoff, albeit whichever team loses the game, will have to most likely run the table thereafter. The Mad Hatter, Les Miles, is undefeated in opening non conference games to start the season at LSU, while Wisconsin is coming off a good season last year where they went 9-4.

Chivas USA vs. Los Angeles Galaxy

The cross the hall rivalry between Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS opens a new chapter on Sunday when the two teams take the pitch at the StubHub Center in Carson. Chivas will look to end a 7 match winless streak against the Galaxy and hope for a bright spot in a dismal season thus far. The Galaxy currently find themselves in second place in the Western Conference with 43 points and will look to catch the Seattle Sounders who are in first place with 48 points for home field advantage in the MLS Cup. For Galaxy striker, Landon Donovan, it could be the last time he ever plays the city rivals as he announced his retirement earlier this month.

Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur

Liverpool heads to White Hart Lane this Labor Day weekend as each team looks to secure three points early in the Barclays Premier League season. Liverpool’s newest transfer, Mario Balotelli could make his debut as well as the Italian striker returns to the Premier League.
