In the past couple of weeks sexual assault claims have been running rampant through the media, letting us know that sexual assault is a national problem. In Brooklyn, a father and son duo are being praised for saving a young woman from becoming a victim.

According to the New York Daily News, the father and son duo managed to scare away and chase a man who assaulted and was moments away from raping a young woman in Brooklyn.

Luis Rodriguez, 46, and his stepson Antonio Penas, 28, stayed late at their martial arts and fitness studio in Brooklyn on Monday. Leaving after midnight to drive home, they discovered weird noises once they got out of the car. The weird noises came from the direction of a van. It was then they realized a man was attacking a woman.

“At first I wasn’t sure if it was just a boyfriend-and-girlfriend altercation,” Ruiz told the Daily News. “They were on the ground … He was on top of her, you could see something was happening ... He was like shaking her … There was some roughness going on.”

The site reports that when they approached the suspect, they asked him if something was wrong. he walked away without saying anything.

The woman, a 27-year-old who was on her way home from her synagogue, had a bloody face.

“I see her panties down to her ankles, and her pantyhose were ripped. Her face was just – he really beat her down,” Ruiz said, according to the Daily News.

Pinas followed the attacker as ruiz stayed with the woman, that pleaded with him not to leave her alone.

“He looked back two times,” Piñas said of the attacker. “I slowed down, went across the street and behind some cars, so he didn't even know that I was there ... I stayed like a block away from him. He was carrying a bag, that's why I didn't beat him up, because I didn't know what was in the bag – weapons or what."

Instead of cpnfronting the attacker, Pinas, a former auxiliary police officer, contacted the police.

“The attacker seemed cool and relaxed – he was waving to people," Pinas tells the site. "He was walking like nothing happened. The cop car pulled up, and I got in it so I could identify him. The cops came up to him on either side, he kind of did a little motion when they came up to him, like he was gonna try to run, but they had him trapped."

Police arrested the attacker, Todd Deas immediately and charged him with attempted rape, assault and strangulation. The 31-year-old attacker has an extensive rap sheet that consists of three bids in prison and 19 arrests, including sealed rape and sexual abuse cases from 1999 and 2001.

“I just hope she’s okay," Ruiz told the Daily News. "She still got beat up very badly, and it was horrible. I'm glad we caught the guy – that is what's important.”

Emergency workers rushed the 27-year-old woman to Elmhurst Hospital who had swelling on the left side of her face and bleeding from her nose and left ear, according to police. Investigators prepared a rape kit, police said.

Deas is currently awaiting arraignment as of Wednesday morning. There is no word on his attorney at this time.
