Manchester United striker, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is headed to Real Madrid in a move no one saw coming. We have been reporting all month that Chicharito’s days are numbered at Old Trafford and that a move was imminent, but never was the Spanish powerhouse on the radar. After resigning himself to a bench role with United and with the Mexican national team, Chicharito who publicly and repeatedly voiced his discontent with being a “super-sub” was thought to be headed to clubs like Juventus, Valencia, Tottenham, and Southhampton where he would start and have a much larger role.

Now, after years of complaining about being on the bench, he is finally headed to Real Madrid where he is expected to be on the bench. Real Madrid is littered with stars and has a formidable front four known as the “fantastic four” which consists of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and newcomer, James Rodriguez. Chicharito is certainly not better than those starting four and definitely not at this stage in his career. More than likely, the Mexican star will back up Benzema at the #9 position.

According to Spanish Radio station, COPE, and multiple Spanish media outlets, Real Madrid has agreed to retain Chicharito on a one year loan from Manchester United. According to Yahoo! Sports, the loan amount is still being negotiated and the deal could end up being permanent as well. According to sources with Los Blancos in Madrid, the deal to secure Chicharito was made after their attempts at getting AS Monaco’s Radamel Falcao fell through. It had been reported for weeks now that Real was interested in Falcao and had been using Rodriguez as a recruiting tool, but apparently the deal fell apart just hours before the transfer window is set to close later tonight.

Real Madrid’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti should be excited as he finally has the back up to Benzema he’s been wanting, and did not inherit a media disaster on who would start Benzema or Falcao had they gotten the Colombian striker. Benzema is the undisputed starter for Real after signing a huge extension with the club this summer.

Chicharito should conclude Real Madrid’s transfer business for the summer as the team had an amazing month spending over $130 million on Toni Kroos, Keylor Navas, James Rodriguez and now Chicharito. Chicharito should be in Bernabeu on Monday where he will complete a physical exam and meet his new teammates.
